Now that we're hearing Capaldi is set to leave with Moffat, I thought it would be a good time to start this thread. Who will be the next Doctor? Rupert Grint is mentioned often, partly because he's ginger and that would provide a great regeneration moment. But I can't imagine him playing the Doctor successfully. So it's a no from me. Eddie Redmayne has been suggested frequently, particularly due to his role as Newt Scamander in 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' - a character who is said to be quite similar to the Doctor. Being so well-known, his casting would be a huge boost for the popularity of the show. Could he be the "dashing male lead" the BBC are supposedly looking for? Hayley Atwell has been discussed, among others, as a potential candidate should the Doctor become female. There's plenty of speculation that the BBC will choose a female actor for the sake of choosing a female actor (even if a male actor is the best candidate) as it's quite unrealistic that an in-universe process which is supposed to be random most of the time has produced 14-ish male Doctors and 0 female Doctors. This might be a bit out there but I really hope Meryl Streep is the next Doctor. She would be great. But it'll probably be someone we've never heard of.
